If you have water damaged wood floor, there are several steps you need to take in order to repair the damage. The most important aspects are making sure that you dry the floor, relieving the physical stress of the floor planks, and making sure that you don’t have to pay for the damage. With all of these factors accounted for, you can greatly reduce damage to your floor, pocket book, and pride.
Tip #1 Dry The Floor As Soon AS Possible
The first priority of repairing a water damaged wood floor is to make sure that the surface is dried in a small period of time. In order to dry your wood floor, you should dry soak up as much water as possible with a mop, towel or anything else that will absorb. The next thing you need to do is purchase or rent industrial fans, and focus them on the floor. This takes extra moisture out of the interior of the planks.
Tip #2 Remove 2 Boards Across The Surface
This may sound a little extreme, but it solves two specific problems. When a wood flooring surface is flooded it will warp. This is not guaranteed to happen but it is extremely likely.
When warping occurs, you should remove two planks down the center of the floor to relieve pressure. This will eliminate warping of the other surfaces by removing the combined force of all boards. Removing planks will also expose the underlying surface to air, and eliminate even more moisture.
Tip #3 Ventilate The Room
This will not only dry out the top of the surface but it will reduce the internal moisture of the wood. By reducing the internal moisture you will decrease the likely hood or mold growth, and long term bending of the wood planks.
Tip #4 Contact Your Insurance Provider
This is one of the best things you can do to eliminate a headache. Often times the work that you do on your damaged floor will be covered by your homeowners insurance. Paying for repair by a professional can be expensive. If you don’t have a great deal of money to spend, make sure you invest the time to contact your insurance provider and see if they can cover the cost of repairs.
The best way to solve a water damaged hardwood floor is by reducing the moisture on the surface, reducing board pressure, and ventilating the room. After you do this, be sure to contact your insurance provider because more often than not, they will pick up the tab.
