Hope you enjoy the read as much as I did and please if you have something to say, use the comments form below to let everyone know your thoughts.

Have a great day!

When you choose to replace your existing floor with laminate flooring, you will be able to enjoy the look of solid hardwood or ceramic tile without the expense and maintenance that these types of flooring require. It is just as easy to install laminate flooring as any other type.

If you have decided on tile laminate flooring, installation can be easy if you are prepared. The best way to do that is to do some research and read all installation instructions that come with your product before you begin.

The first thing you will have to do, is to decide the layout. The joints are equal in every direction so it is not necessary to adjust the tiles to the light coming in. You can install laminate tiles in a traditional tile pattern. This pattern brings all the four corners together to a single point. You will need to measure the width of the room and figure out the width of the last row of tiles. The last tile should be at least 2″ wide. You will have a more attractive result if you saw the tiles for both the first and last rows.

If you are working with a concrete floor, you will need to lay out the foam underlayer with a moisture barrier where the membrane flap extends out onto the sub floor. You should begin the installation with just one row of foam laid out. When you are ready to lay the next row of foam, you can lay it over the extended plastic membrane flap and then tape the foam sections together with duct tape to form a moisture barrier.

If you have wood as your sub floor, you then lay out the foam and butt the edges together as needed. You should not overlap the edges. You can tape the foam together with duct tape as well.

Be sure you look over all your materials before you install anything. You should never install any material that has been damaged or has any defects. If you do, you take the chance that the warranty on your purchase may not apply.

Laminate flooring is a new type of flooring, one that has been on the market for just a few years. If you have not seen laminate flooring in a home yet, you are going to be in for a big surprise. Laminate flooring is all about obtaining that real wood floor look, without having to have all the needed care for a wood floor in the long run. This type of flooring can be installed in any room of the home, where lots of moisture is not going to be found. If you have a laundry room where you have water dripping on the floor all the time, you may want to avoid putting laminate flooring in that room. Laminate flooring is great in the bedroom, in the hall, in the living room and so much more.

Laminate flooring is easy to care for. To clean a laminate floor in your home you will need just a dust mop or a very dry wet mop. As with a wood floor, you really don’t to over wet the flooring in your home. The flooring that is too wet, all the time is eventually going to warp. The water will get in the material and hold that water. As the water dries out the material in the laminate flooring is going to move and change just as real wood does. Don’t worry, laminate flooring installed properly and care for can last years and years in your home, often times longer than linoleum or tile flooring.

Laminate flooring can be installed in any room of the home, which has a level floor. If you have a floor where the sub floor is not even or level, you should install a new sub floor before putting the laminate flooring down. Laminate flooring is going to ‘go’ together and ‘fit’ together better when it is all level, and it is going to last longer as it is going to connect together best when on a level surface.

You can install a laminate flooring in a bathroom where you control the amount of water on the floor. You can also install a laminate flooring in the kitchen if you are careful about how much water and spills you have on the flooring. These same principles apply to wood flooring as well so don’t worry about being the ‘first’ to do this. Laminate flooring can be installed in the family room or in the basement rooms where you spent a lot of your time. Laminate flooring is going to keep your home cool, and it great if you have pets so you can just sweep up for hair off the floors in your home.

Should I acid stain my concrete floor or install laminate flooring over top?

Which of these is easier, cheaper, better looking, etc? If you have done it yourself, your feedback is especially appreciated!

Determining which hardwood or laminate floor type is best suited for your pet can be tricky. While a number of laminate floors are strong enough to handle pet wear (e.g. high pressure laminate) others are weaker and may warp or crack upon exposure to pet traffic or accidents.

Finding the right type of hardwood flooring for your pets can also be difficult. Those who have large dogs would be better off with hardwood that has a high Janka Hardness rating. Janka Hardness ratings are given depending on the hardness of a particular wood, and are based on a scale of 0 to 4000 (4000 being the hardest and 0 being the softest). Hardwood floors that are most likely to endure pet wear and tear without damage tend to be higher up on the scale (e.g. Brazilian Teak; Brazilian Walnut).

Keep in mind that both hardwood and laminate flooring do not take well to pet accidents. The acidity of urine can cause damage that may be impossible to repair. A benefit to purchasing solid hardwood flooring is that it can often be refinished a few times during its lifecycle. Refinishing is the process of sanding and staining your floors so they look close to, or as good, as they did when you first purchased them. Refinishing can help remove unsightly scratches from pet nails and surface dings.

While some laminate floor types may look like solid hardwood, they are actually just a translucent wear layer atop a picture (decorative layer) of the wood that it’s made to resemble. Laminate flooring cannot be refinished; often times the only way to repair damage is to replace them. Save yourself time and money for laminate repairs by wiping up pet accidents and water bowl spills immediately after they happen. Most stains can be removed with a cleaning solution that’s recommended by the manufacturer.

When shopping for laminate floors for your pet, consider purchasing the stronger laminate floor types that can handle a high level of wear without damaging. This includes high pressure laminate (HPL) and laminate that has an AC rating of AC3, AC4 or AC5. AC stands for Abrasion Class, and is a rating system that determines the strength of a particular laminate type and which household areas its best suited for based on those results. Laminate floors that have an AC3 rating are recommended for most residential and some commercial areas; while AC5 includes laminate that’s strong enough to handle high commercial foot traffic (e.g. department stores).

Keep in mind that stronger hardwood and laminate floors often mean a higher price tag. While it may seem like a lot now, in the long run it could end up saving you hundreds to thousands of dollars in floor repairs.

1fea

One of the newest most innovative laminate flooring products on the market is Pergo Presto. Pergo Presto is a glueless laminate floor that is installed by sliding the pieces into one another by the way of groove and tongue. With Pergo Presto there is an adhesive strip on the backside of the piece that attaches it to the sub floor (can be made of wood, cement, or other flooring products). There is no gluing and no wetting with Pergo Presto, just the simple application.

This type of Pergo floor has a built in edge sealant to protect the floor from getting any moisture beneath it. Moisture can ruin the floor through warping and swelling. This new floor type by Prego is a great solution for people who enjoy to do-it-yourself, and who have the financial leeway for the convenience of a glue-free laminate floor.

Where to Find It

This Pergo product can be found at most large home improvement stores and other flooring stores that carry laminate wood flooring. There are also online companies that sell Pergo flooring. Be wise and cost compare to make sure you get the best price with the customer service you expect and deserve. Customer service is important, since you will want to be able to ask questions or find quick answers to your Pergo Presto installation problems. It is important that you are able to get the help you need.

Pergo Presto Installation

Before attempting to install the Pergo Presto floor on your own, make sure you seriously consider your level of do-it-yourself expertise. If you feel comfortable reading the Pergo Presto instructions and completing the installation on your own, that is great. If, on the other hand, you are nervous and feel you would like some further instruction, there are a number of options you have. You have the option to take a home improvement class at your local home improvement store, or you can watch an online video on the installation process of a laminate floor by Pergo. There will also books about installing such a floor in your nearby library. If you take the time to further your knowledge on your own, do not forget to pay attention to the specifics provided by the Pergo manufacturer to ensure the best results.

In order to allow the laminate flooring to adjust to the levels of moisture in the air of the room you are going to be installing it in, leave the Prego flooring in the room (in open boxes) for at least 48 hours prior to the Pergo Presto installation (72 hours if you live in an extremely dry or humid climate). This also will allow for the Pergo Presto laminate to do any swelling or shrinking before you spend the time installing it.

Your Presto floor can be installed on almost any subfoor, including wood and tile. If the room you want to install the flooring in has carpet, you should remove it prior to installation. You should also make sure you use the tools offered by the manufacturer, such as tapping block and tightening straps. This will help you to fit the Pergo flooring as tightly as possible together. Make sure there is a ¼ inch strip gap around the perimeter of the floor. You can use spacers for any assistance you might need. If the pieces are not fitting together easily, make sure you check the grooves for extra sawdust or debris. If you find some, clean it out and try again. To prevent sawdust, cut the pieces to fit in a separate area from where the installation will be taking place.

If you are installing your laminate flooring in an area where water is present, such as a bathroom or kitchen, be extra careful. You can wipe up spills on the laminate surface, but if any water seeps underneath the flooring, extensive damage can happen. Use sealant offered by Prego on the perimeter to keep water from getting beneath the floor-a “must have” if you are installing in the aforementioned rooms where water is present.

If you own a hardwood floor, you know just how fragile your beautiful flooring can sometimes be when it comes to spills, accidents, or scratches. In this article, we’re going to present some strategies for repairing damage to hardwood flooring. Although you can apply our techniques to any hardwood floor damage, we are going to be focusing on scratches and gouges.

When your hardwood floor receives a light scratch, it is always possible that the scratch has not penetrated through the wax coating to the actual wood. Examine the scratch carefully. If you see a lighter color (the color of the actual wood) deep inside the scratch, you’ve probably damaged the wood. If not, simply strip your wax coating and reapply it, finishing with a good buffing.

Sometimes, even if a scratch has penetrated to the wood, it has not cut into the subsurface wood. Instead, it has just lightly damaged the wood varnish or coloring. For repairing hardwood floors with this problem, contact the manufacturer of your flooring to get a small amount of varnish or coloring that matches your floor. Follow directions, except that you will be doing your hardwood floor scratch repair in miniature, using a q-tip to re-stain the scratch. After it is stained, apply wax coating and buff.

If, on the other hand, your hardwood floor scratch repair needs to be more extensive, you have a couple of options. First, you can do the work yourself, which will require an electric sander and is a little bit tricky. If this doesn’t seem like a good option, you can ask the manufacturer of your flooring to recommend someone to help you with hardwood floor scratch repair.

If you are going to do the repair yourself, basically you will be stripping a single board (or more than a single board, if the scratch is long) down to the bare wood. First, strip the wax coating on your floorboards. Next, consult your flooring manufacturer to find out the right way to strip any sealant, coloring, or varnish from the board.

When this is finished, you can use an electric sander to sand the board smooth. If the scratch does not dig in too deeply, you may be able to get away with a light sanding of just the area surrounding the scratch. Otherwise, the entire board will need sanding and leveling. Once the scratch has disappeared, you can reapply varnish and coatings and then (after they have dried) reapply a wax coating and buff for a final shine.

Can you lay carpet on top of laminate flooring, or does the laminate have to be taken up?

It is possible to install carpet over laminate, but it is not a good idea. The carpet cannot be glued to the laminate because it will adhere poorly. If you want padding under the carpet you will have to install tack strips which must be nailed down through the laminate and into the subfloor. If you have a concrete subfloor this will be a ridiculous endeavor.

The best solution is removal of the laminate. This is extremely easy. Just remove any baseboard or 1/4 round moulding and remove the laminate planks a row at a time.
This will take very little time and save a lot of frustration.

1f45

Like all types of flooring that you install in your home, you may never have laminate flooring problems, but just in case you do, you should be ware of how to repair them. The usual problems that homeowners have with this type of flooring are:

* Peaking

* Buckling

* Gapping

* Mold and mildew

* Expanding chipped corners

Peaking refers to the boards pushing one another up in places in the floor and forming a type of small peak. It could be the result of a lack of room for the flooring to expand because there was not enough room left around the sides of the room. To repair this problem, follow the board along to the wall and remove the baseboard or molding. Thai may allow the flooring the space it needs or you may need to cut away some of the laminate close to the wall. Then you can replace the baseboard.

Moisture and water damage can cause the flooring to buckle. A laminate floor should never be wet mopped because the moisture can get into the MDF layer of the plank and damage it. If this is a problem you encounter, you will have to replace the floor.

Gapping happens when the planks of the flooring start to pull away from one another. However, this problem does not occur very often. It will happen if the temperature of the room drops to below normal causing the planks to contract.

Mold and mildew are caused by excessive moisture. If you have this problem with your laminate flooring, you first have to find the source of the mold and mildew and eradicate it. Then you have to find the source of the excessive moisture and take steps to prevent it from occurring again. Once you clean up the mold from the flooring and make sure you have solved the moisture problem, you won’t have this problem with your flooring.

If you notice chipped corners, you may not have installed the flooring properly. If you tap the planks together using too much force, you could chip the corners. If you notice this happening, you should replace them as soon as it happens. Using a vacuum cleaner on laminate flooring with a beater bar can also damage the floor and it could also be the result of poor quality flooring. If you choose thin flooring because of the cheap price and install it in a high traffic area, then you will probably have to replace it because of this chipping problem.

Any ideas on how to install laminate flooring on steps when the stair nose isn't thick enough?

We just installed laminate flooring in our family room and want to continue it up a few steps. We bought the matching stair nose but when we lay it out the steps, it isn't thick enough to cover the whole lip. So if you are looking at the steps from the bottom of the stair case, the stair nose doesn't extend far enough vertically to cover the whole lip of the step, so you can see part of the wood that is the stair base. The wood on the step base is just unfinished wood from when they built the house.

Any suggestions for how to make the stair nose work or other solutions for putting laminate on steps?

Laminate flooring is more than just an affordable way to have a great looking floor. It is also extremely easy to install, making it one of the most popular types of flooring in the United States. People are drawn to this inexpensive design because nearly everyone cannot tell the difference between laminate flooring and authentic wood. This is because it appears to resemble natural wood and it comes in hundreds of different patterns, such as stone and marble. Nonetheless, laminate flooring proves to be a great alternative for someone who cannot afford anything else.

According to Webster’s, laminate flooring is simply “a hard surface covering utilizing a fiberboard core and melamine wear layer, which is available in blocks, planks, and squares.” Although this definition makes the flooring sound tricky and bewildering, it is actually quite painless to install. It is a great do it yourself project for anyone who has the motivation and the time to do it.

The first thing you need to do is find out how to prepare your floor before purchasing the laminate flooring. Most businesses will tell you to make sure there is no dirt or dust present on your old surface. It is also wise to make sure the floor is level and there are no slants anywhere near where you are placing the pieces. This could make things very difficult when trying to install the laminate.

There are many different types of installation available. Therefore, after getting your old surface ready, you should ask yourself how much experience you have had with installing floors. If you know absolutely nothing, you should use the snap technique. This means that the laminate pieces are actually linked together and are easily snapped into place. However, this process may end up being more expensive. For that reason, it is smart to price everything before you pick an option. Another great way for beginners is to buy the pieces that already come with glue. All you have to do is just add water to the back of the pieces and place them wherever you would like. Most people go for this option, since it is the easiest and less expensive. Luckily, there are exceptionally simple ways to create great flooring.

No matter what you have as a floor covering, laminate flooring can be put over it. From concrete to wood, laminate is easily placed on top. The only thing to remember is that laminate cannot be placed over carpet. It is also great to remember that laminate flooring requires no hammers or nails. The only tool you need is glue, unless you buy the pieces that already come with it.

Another crucial step is to check your laminate flooring. Sometimes companies will accidentally send damaged or ghastly products. By carefully checking the entire laminate piece, you will be able to make sure that everything is accurate. If you have begun installation without noticing a flaw, chances are you won’t be able to return it. Therefore, it is extremely important to check everything before you start.

Regardless of how experienced you are with installations, laminate flooring is piece of cake to put in your home. It is not only an inexpensive way to make your home look stunning, but it also will give you an abundance of pleasure for years to come.

If you have a glued down Marmoleum Floor and have either a deep scratch or gouge, this is the information you’ve been looking for. Repairing any sheet flooring may never be as good as new, options do exist to fix damaged flooring.

Before trying this on your Marmoleum floor, be sure to test it out in an hidden inconspicuous area.

Try it either in a closet or under the stove. While in my opinion, it does work well, you may not like the results. So be smart and test it out.

I suggest you play with it to get the hang of it. First try follow the directions below on a scrap, making a deep gouge in the scrap and then doing a test repair. If satisfactory, make the repair

Directions:

-Take a scrap or order a sample and scrape the material surface with a knife blade to create a finely ground up Marmoleum particle.

-Once you have a bunch of colored Marmoleum Dust or Particles, Make a paste using a small amount of Elmers glue. Start out by adding just a few drops of glue and add more until you get it to a dry mushy paste.

-Take the paste and apply in to the damaged area.

-Next, smooth it out over the scratch or gouged area.

-Let it dry overnight.

-Finally, once dry, you can apply Marmoleum floor polish if needed to the effected area or reapply to the entire floor if desired. Applying the floor finish/polish will help bring the patch to the same sheen level as the existing area.

I have a floating wood floor in my basement with a huge chunk taken out of a small bit of it. Is it possible to repair this without taking out the entire floor and redoing it?

When I moved into my home, the floor in the living room had just been refinished with beautiful honey toned laminate flooring. It was beautiful and it fit my decor perfectly. The only problem was the fact that one of my chair had popped a cap, unbeknownst to everyone involved, and it wasn’t until a few weeks later, when I went to rearrange a few pieces of furniture, that I noticed it. Much to my horror, the gleaming floor beneath the chair had become a scratched mess and I shuddered at the thought of having to fix them.

Now, I’m sure that I am not the only person who has had to deal with scratched laminate flooring. In fact, I’m almost positive that the problem is universally shared. The simple truth is, if you are going to own laminate flooring, at one time you will own scratched laminate flooring. Most people would simply sigh and shift the furniture around to cover the evidence, something that I actually did for a few months, but laminate flooring can be fixed without having to tear out pieces and replace them.

Most repairs in laminate flooring are pretty minor. A glass may have fallen and gouged a small hole or the kids may have scraped a toy car, minus wheels, across a small section. The scratches and holes are simply surface damage but they definitely detract from the once shiny beauty of your floors.

With minor damage, you will only need to do minor repairs to your laminate. Unfortunately, as with most repairs, there is nothing regularly stocked in your shelves that will fix the floors. You will need to make a run to the local home hardware or flooring store to pick up a repair kit. Some manufacturers will make repair kits for their flooring so the best place to start is the store where you purchased your flooring.

If you aren’t sure of the manufacturer or the manufacturer does not have a repair product, simply purchase a generic repair kit. A repair kit usually consists of a tube of putty or wax. This is your actual filler. Some repair kits have colored putty while others have paint that you mix to create the matching floor color; this you mix with the putty before applying. Both are perfectly fine to purchase and you will usually run yourself about ten to twenty dollars.

Some repair kits come with putty knife and everything else you need but if it doesn’t simply pick up a putty knife while you are at the store. Popsicle sticks work perfectly for applying the putty to the crack.

Before you start repairing your scratches and dents, make sure the area is clean of any debris and is dry. There is no sense repairing a spot if a patch of dog hair is going to be glued into the floor. Once the area is prepared, it’s time to get mixing.

If you went with a colored putty that matches your floor, all you will need to do is spoon in the putty, but if you went with a mix, you will need to match and create the desired color. Once you have that, spoon in the putty and smooth with the putty knife. Remove any of the excess putty so you have a smooth surface. Lastly, wipe the area around the scratch, being careful to not touch the repaired scratch with a clean cloth to wash away any residue.

Once it dries, your laminate flooring should look as good as new.

Sometimes, you will find the occasional scratch that is too shallow for the putty to work properly. If this is the case, the best product on the market is ScratchAway. This is a spray on treatment for any small scratches on laminate and other wood flooring. All you need to do is spray the area and then buff until it is dry.

So with a few little tricks of the trade, there are very few reasons why you can’t enjoy scratch free laminate flooring for years to come.

How is Laminate flooring made and how do I protect my new Laminate floor?

Laminate flooring has grown by leaps and bounds in a very short period of time. The reason behind the rapid laminate wood flooring growth is the ease of installing laminate flooring. This wood flooring system is a floating floor that has a laminate flooring underlayment on which the laminate floor lays over top of. Another benefit to having a laminate floor system is the durability of the floor. Laminate flooring manufacturers are using new technologies to create a very dense fiber wood core with a very durable top plastic coating.

Constructions of laminate floors

There are basically two types of laminate floor constructions. You have the direct pressure laminate and the high pressure laminate. The two different styles vary in the way they are attached to the core. The direct pressure process is a one step process where they fuse all the layers directly to the core all at the same time by using melamine resins and pressure and heat they are impregnated and together to form a very durable laminate plank flooring. The other high pressure laminate flooring is a two layer process. The first is that the craft paper style sheets will be glued together and using a print film, which is then glued to the core. Here everything is glued together and using high pressure they become very hard and durable.

What is available for Laminate flooring?

The laminate wood flooring is almost invincible to spills, stains, burns and a very high tolerance to scratches. Laminate flooring prices have such a wide range but can offer you just about any replicas of any wood species that you would desire. They will come in a few different varieties such as the single strip, two strips or even the three strips with micro beveled edges, square edges or just beveled edges. Depending on the quality you are looking for the top finishes and treatments will vary the price of the laminate wood flooring. Because these floors can imitate just about any flooring on the market, your choices for texture and looks give you an abundance of choices such as traditional stone, ceramic tiles and beautiful hardwood.

Caring for your Laminate floor

Laminate flooring is stain and fade along with scratch resistant and with a few preventive maintenance ways you can have your floor last a very long time. First you must follow the laminate flooring manufacturer’s limitations and by keeping their recommendations in consideration you will have a floor that will last forever.

Your Maintenance and laminate wood flooring care

·	Place designer mats in front of stoves and sinks along with all the room entrances

·	Always have felt protectors under the feet of furniture

·	Use chair coasters that are clean and working properly will help

·	One of the biggest things you can do is to try and follow the laminate floor manufacturers recommendations for room temperature and what they recommend for humidity levels

Maintaining laminate flooring

Laminate flooring is very durable and not that hard to keep clean. All you have to do is regularly sweep or vacuum with a soft brush. Damp mop the laminate wood floor using a bit of ammonia or vinegar and water being careful not to flood the work panels as you can damage them this way. Some products that are not recommended for your laminate floor are soaps, scouring powder, floor polish or steel wool as these may damage the laminate wood flooring. Always test a product that you are unsure of in a low visible area. If you have to remove a stain use the recommended laminate floor cleaner and mop up to keep any water from entering the joints. Also make sure you use a damp mop and not a wet one.
